Lions figures vs. 49ers, latest: Detroit looks to build a last-ditch streak on Monday Night Football.

The Detroit Lions franchise is in an unusual position as the 2024 season winds down. Next Sunday, they will face the Vikings for the NFC title (regular season) in the first game of the 13-team, 13-win season. But before that game of the season, they have San Francisco on Monday evening to meet a 49ers team that won during injury time to the finish line.

It seems like every position in San Francisco has been decimated at one point or another this season by injuries, and for Week 17, it’s the offensive line. Three starters — Aaron Banks, Spencer Burford and Colton McKivitz — are on the injury report heading into this week, with Banks and Burford out and McKivitz on limited liability.

Aside from the Lions-Vikings matchup next week, tonight’s result won’t affect the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The winner of next week’s Lions-Vikings game in Detroit will retain the NFC North and the No. 1 seed. 1 in the playoffs. Head coach Dan Campbell said the Lions “bring it all.” [they’ve] I’m in this game,” and I’m not going to rest the starters.

Live29 updates

  • Brock Purdy looks hurt

Brock Purdy exited San Francisco’s final drive after apparently injuring his right hand on a hit. He appeared to be struggling with passing balls and was substituted for Joshua Dobbs.

  • Jahmyr Gibbs TD puts Lions in control

Jahmyr Gibbs probably finished it. The Lions running back slid down the right sideline for a 30-yard touchdown to extend Detroit’s lead to 40-28 with 2:58 left. Losing an extra point is pointless.

  • Purdy’s second pick of the short circuits goes into Lions territory

Brock Purdy’s second season tonight was huge. A pickoff to Kerby Joseph cuts short to Lions territory midway through the fourth quarter. The Lions regain possession with 7:34 left and a chance to run time and extend their lead to two possessions while holding a 34-28 advantage.

Joseph came in two Purdy ways. His first one led to Detroit’s attention.

  • Lions don’t go for fourth-and-8, and FG

Two punts were incomplete and forced the Lions to go for a fourth-and-8. Jake Bates is good from 42 yards to extend Detroit’s lead to 34-28 with 10:19 remaining.

  • Jake Moody misses from 58

Jake Moody is now 0-for-2 with two long field goals. After a Lion stop on third-and-10, Moody missed wide left from 58 yards. He missed from 51 in the first half. Detroit takes over with a 31-28 lead with 13:25 remaining.

  • Fourth quarter, still no punts

The fourth quarter is underway, and we still don’t have a game tonight.

  • The fourth Lions gamble pays off

The Oilers missed their second fourth down attempt in the red zone. Jared Goff’s move to Amon-Ra St. Brown gave the Lions a 31-28 lead after their fourth down attempt in the first quarter went incomplete. The Lions turn Brock Purdy’s interception into seven points.

  • Purdy’s first offense gives the Lions the ball

Brock Purdy’s perfect score is no more. An aerial pass to Kerby Joseph gives the ball back and a chance to take the lead late in the third quarter. San Francisco leads, 28-24.

  • Jake Bates is fine from 57 after Nick Bosa is sacked

Nick Bosa’s second sack of Jared Goff puts the Lions on fourth-and-16 and forces Jake Bates’ 57-yard field goal. Bates is good from deep to save the drive and cut San Francisco’s lead to 28-24.

  • Ricky Pearsall sets up Deebo Samuel TD

Deebo Samuel scored, but Ricky Pearsall made it possible and continues to play in this offense tonight. Pearsall’s 39-yard catch-and-run got the 49ers deep into Detroit territory before Samuel scooped up a five-yard pass from Brock Purdy. 49ers lead, 28-21.

Pearsall averaged 102 yards on the night and looks like a strong fit for the role ahead of Samuel in the 49ers offense next season.

  • Still no punts

The 49ers came up with a fourth down, and Jake Moody lost the field for San Francisco in the first quarter. But this game hasn’t seen a punt early in the third quarter.

  • The Lions struck first in the second half

We have a tie game. The Lions cap a 66-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Sam LaPorta to open the second half. A successful two-point conversion ties the game at 21. A great game for a low-scoring contest.

  • The starting lions are still there

We are moving on to the second part. The Oilers have the ball up front and are playing the starters, just like Dan Campbell promised.

  • 49ers 21, Lions 13: Key first half stats

Detroit’s stuttering defense is giving Lions fans anxiety ahead of the playoffs as each team’s offense came out firing tonight.

Brock Purdy: 14 of 16 for 200 yards with 2 TDs, no turnovers: 1 rushing TD
Jared Goff: 11 of 13 for 138 yards with 1 TD and no turnovers

Isaac Guerendo: 7 carries for 26 yards, 3 catches for 56 yards
Jahmyr Gibbs: 9 carries for 60 yards

Ricky Pearsall: 4 catches for 63 yards, 1 TD
Jameson Williams: 1 catch for 44 yards, 1 TD; 1 TD run

49ers total offense: 260 yards at 8.4 yards per play; zero turnovers
Lions passing yards: 211 yards at 7 yards per play; zero turnovers

  • Missed Jake Moody FG ends half

Jake Moody hit a 51-yard field goal with 2 seconds left, and the 49ers went scoreless for the first time in the first quarter. It’s been a tough outing for Moody, who is 10-for-17 on field goals in recent weeks after starting the season 13-for-14. A sprained ankle in Week 5 derailed his season.

San Francisco led 21-13 at halftime and was largely holding on to a depleted Lions defense despite coming up short on its final play.

  • We have a dead body

The Lions got it on fourth-and-3 at the 49ers 8-yard line. Rookie cornerback Renardo Green came up with a pass in the end zone from Jared Goff to Sam LaPorta. It is the first driving group that did not end up crashing.

The Lions take over on downs with 1:13 left in the half.

  • We have imperfections

Jared Goff’s incomplete pass with 5:05 left in the first half is the game’s first in any quarter. These crimes have a field day.

  • 3 49ers drives, 3 49ers TDs

San Francisco’s offense is off to a great start to the season. The 49ers now have a 21-13 lead after all three of their three drives. Ricky Pearsall set this one up with a 40-yard catch from Brock Purdy before Purdy ran it in from nine yards out.

Not a good sign for a Lions defense built for the playoffs.

  • Jameson Williams is dangerous Part II

There is no speed limit. Jameson Williams just got his second game of the night with a third-and-12 hook and lateral from Amon-Ra. St. Brown. The 49ers defenders had no chance as Williams scampered down the sideline for a 42-yard score.

Ben Johnson wizardry strikes again, but it begs the question: why not save this for the playoffs? But Johnson has plenty of other tricks for the postseason.

49ers 14, Lions 13 early in the second quarter.

  • Nick Bosa misses out, could be injured

Nick Bosa just sacked Jared Goff on first-and-20, but he’s in the sideline medical tent after taking a friendly helmet-to-helmet hit on the sack.
