There is certainly a lot going on at this point in the college football calendar. Not only are we in bowls and College football season, but we have just finished the first transfer window. Add in the annual performance of recruiting efforts and Name, Image and Likeness, and there’s no shortage of things to keep an eye on.
One of the main things in list building now besides recruiting is what the program can do on the transfer portal. Ohio State has been slow to get on the portal train but got a few additions (Caleb Downs, Seth McGlaughlin, Quinshon Judkins) in the second window last year.
This year, OSU has been working hard to attract guys through the early transfer portal window, but you can bet the effort is far from over. To keep you up to date, we like to follow all of the players coming to Ohio State outside of the transfer portal, so feel free to check back often.
Here’s a real-time look at the players the Buckeyes were able to convince to U-Haul back to the shores of the Olentangy to continue their college playing careers, updated as news becomes available.
Phillip Daniels, Offensive War
Commitment Day | December 18th
Transfer From | Minnesota
Years of Eligibility Remaining | 3
247Sports Portal rankings | No. 4 OT, No. 39 in total
Potential impact
Daniels may not be a big hit in the following, but he has a few starts under his belt at the Big Ten level with Minnesota due to injury ahead of him. in depth chart. He was playing well and could become a regular player, but that remains to be seen. As is often the case with the offensive line, it’s hard to tell how quickly – or even if – a kid will develop – but depth is a great way to find the right position on the offensive line. That seems to be the case here.
CJ Donaldson, Running Back
Commitment Day | December 23rd
Transfer From | West Virginia
Years of Eligibility Remaining | 1
247Sports Portal rankings | No. 6 RB, No. 106 in total
Potential impact
Ohio State is losing a lot of experience and talent as Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson move on to the NFL after this year. There are only two scholarships on the list other than James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon. Three young men are on the way, but they are unlikely to be ready to plug and play. Donaldson gives OSU a physical back that could potentially split with Peoples. How much they carry really depends on what the coaches see when it comes to the scheme and culture of the program. He has Power Four experience and at 6-feet, 2-inches, and 238 pounds, he has the body to beat in the Big Ten. That alone deserves a spot on the list.
Logan George, Defensive End
Commitment Day | December 23rd
Transfer From | State of Idaho
Years of Eligibility Remaining | 2
247Sports Portal rankings | No. 46 EDGE, No. 427 in total
Potential impact
George became a playmaking machine from last year’s FCS finalist Idaho State. He finished the year with 57 tackles, a Big Sky-leading 19.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks. He will immediately look to provide depth from the tight end with the loss of Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau. He is arguably ahead of Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson for the No. 1 reps, but you should be able to provide the depth needed to keep that group fresh.
There’s a chance he’ll turn into something similar to former Buckeye Sam Hubbard, but that will depend on how well he can make the transition from the FCS to the top FBS level. And if you think OSU is the only major program looking to lure him to campus, remember that teams like Wisconsin, Mizzou, Utah, Texas A&M, Boise State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Iowa State were all and behind 6-foot, 5-inch, 259 pounds.
Max Klare, A Strong End
Commitment Day | December 23rd
Transfer From | Purdue
Years of Eligibility Remaining | 2
247Sports Portal rankings | No. 1 TE, No. 30 in total
Potential Impact
This is a huge gain for Ohio State. Klare proved to be a major threat in the passing game, finishing the 2024 campaign with 51 catches for 685 yards, good enough to lead Purdue’s offense through the air. You need to find time right away and be a potential developer. He’s not OSU’s top blocker Will Kacmarek, but there’s no denying his ability to be a problem for opposing defenses. The tight end is relatively crowded with Bennett Christian, Jelani Thurman and Max Leblanc also pushing for time – not to mention a group of young up-and-comers, but Klare has proven his worth as one of the top results. solid meeting.
Ethan Onianwa, Offensive Tackle
Commitment Day | December 24th
Transfer From | Rice
Years of Eligibility Remaining | 1
247Sports Portal rankings | No. 14 OT, No. 138 in total
Potential Impact
It’s no secret that Ohio State is in the market for help on the offensive line, especially at the tackle position. Onianwa offers three years of experience at the FCS level and was a potential NFL candidate if he had decided to leave before the year. He’s not an impact player but there’s a good chance he’ll start next year if everything goes as we think. He ranked very high in PFF’s rankings and should have a big role next season on the offensive line. Call this a low-key trap for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes.
