Science Lab: Start the 2024 Cowboys season in the sun

(Editor’s note: The content provided is based on the views and/or opinions of the editors of DallasCowboys.com and not the staff or the Cowboys football organization.)

FRISCO, Texas – After watching a seemingly endless amount of football, and sports in general, in my years walking this world, I can say without a doubt with a strong principle that what happened during the 2024 season in The Dallas Cowboys are one of, if not the. the most jaw-dropping horror sequence I’ve ever seen.

Enter this season on the nearest NASA or SpaceX rocket.

It all started with a bad “all of” order before free agency that was either misunderstood (according to the team’s front office) or cruelly and deliberately ignored after blowing the trumpet by the front office. the front (according to the fanbase).

Eric Kendricks’ swing away from the San Francisco 49ers was the only topic that was brought out of the building while the re-signing of Jourdan Lewis and Rico Dowdle carried the weight of being kept in-house.

Then came the NFL draft, which has a very good view of how the Cowboys were able to replicate my one draft only by trading with the team I hoped they would (Detroit Lions). down and they turn one choice into two. who became Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe.

They would add Marist Liufau and their third-round pick, and, oh, how excited we were to watch the newly drafted group of linebackers along with DeMarvion Overshown.

But after a few games of being able to enjoy Overshown’s immediate dominance and potential All-Pro ceiling, he was stolen from us all again by the injury bug, a painful injury to his knee and leng (after coming back from a torn ACL) will charge him. part of the 2025 season (if not all).

And speaking of dangerous bugs, did that thing have 87 mouths and 174 pairs of toes???

Throw that nasty bug in the rocket again.

I explained this in a previous edition of Science Lab, called “Murphy’s Law Edition”, but here is a reminder of the names that appeared on the injury report and/or the injured area at some point when many games went wrong, and there are many. times, rest of the season:

Offense

  • Dak Prescott, QB*
  • CeeDee Lamb, WR*
  • Brandin Cooks, WR
  • Jake Ferguson, TE
  • John Stephens, Jr., TE*
  • Tyler Guyton, OL
  • Tyler Smith, OL
  • Zack Martin, OL*
  • Chuma Edoga, OL
  • Asim Richards, OL
  • Hunter Luepke, FB

Protection

  • Mike Parsons, EDGE
  • Sam Williams, DE*
  • DeMarcus Lawrence, DE*
  • Marshawn Kneeland, DE
  • Jordan Phillips, DL
  • DeMarvion Overshown, LB*
  • Nick Vigil, LB
  • DaRon Bland, CB
  • Trevon Diggs, CB*
  • Jordan Lewis, CB
  • Josh Butler, CB*
  • Caelen Carson, CB*
  • Amani Oruwariye, CB*
  • Markus Bell, S*
  • Juanyeh Thomas, S

Add in the timing of some of these injuries and how many combined Pro Bowls and All-Pro nods were lost and the list is insultingly extensive. As it turned out, losing Sam Williams early in training camp was a sign we all ignored, and at our peril.

Hell, if you really want to know how bad the injury bug has been this season, I even tore a couple of ligaments in my right elbow, – that bug even attacked others. covering group.

Is the rocket at the launch site, Houston?

And while injuries helped ensure a completely wasted season, the road was already paved by a slow start when health was not yet an insurmountable obstacle. . I mean, come on, this is me you’re talking to, so let’s just shoot it straight here and not dodge the bullet like Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman in the movie “Wanted”.

The truth is, the Cowboys were struggling to find their identity and win games before Week 2, their impressive win against the Cleveland Browns (impressive at the time, anyway) followed. with back-to-back losses at home against the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens.

All engines go, Houston.

They would continue to more in a narrow way The New York Giants on the road before they hit it off alone indeed An impressive win before Week 7: a fantastic performance by Prescott and his defense to upset the Steelers in Pittsburgh with a game-winning drive.

These positive feelings would be immediately reversed and shot down by the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium, a crushing loss that sent the Cowboys into a five-game losing streak, tied for the loss of the five games at home going into Week 12. , pushing their chances of making the playoffs to less than 1 percent with seven games remaining.

T-subtract … 5 … 4… 3 … 2 …

Happily, the coaching staff and the rest of the healthy roster, along with the one-winged CeeDee Lamb, were able to continue to fight their way to a surprise win against the Washington Governors. who turned fortunes in a 180-degree pivot. 4-1 record since Nov. 24 to Dec. 22, with three of those wins being upsets and two against playoff caliber teams.

The Grinch season was fun while it lasted, and it didn’t last long.

After all, the damage was already done, even before the Philadelphia Eagles dropped their black roses on the casket door at Lincoln Financial Field.

And go ahead and get into the failed meeting (and second recent divorce) with Ezekiel Elliott, while you’re at it, but be careful not to accidentally put yourself in a concussion agreement from to all the right nods.

So as the Cowboys begin the 2025 calendar year with the official end of their 2024 regular season, entering the murky fog of the unknown, in agreement, I have one last thing that I worth mentioning here:

Goodbye to 2024, and good luck.
