CHARLOTTE, NC – A playground at the former Eastland Mall is nearing completion after the Charlotte City Council gave the green light for additional funding.
The indoor and outdoor sports facilities will fit into a vacant 29-acre site at the former Eastland Mall.
Charlotte Soccer Academy is one of the four sponsors of this sports center.
“I think of this side of town especially, [soccer is] which is increasing. It’s growing and there aren’t enough soccer fields in the community to support the number of kids who enjoy playing and learning,” said Charlotte Soccer Academy Director of Coach Dan Dudley.
Currently, players ages 3 to 21 practice on multiple fields in the Charlotte area, including soccer and baseball fields at schools.
“Position control, I think, is a big thing for us. We do a good job, making sure that each team has their own space,” said Dudley.
The club is growing, from 200 players in 2010 to 8,500 this year.
“You see we’re using all of our fields here as much as we can, but with our growth right now, I feel like having new fields on this side of town is going to be an amazing step in the right direction,” he said. said Dudley.
EDGE Sports Global, Bolton, Ivory and Cantey LLC and Southern Entertainment are the other producers.
In September, the Charlotte City Council moved the project forward, investing a total of $41 million, which is $11 million more than planned for reimbursement costs related to public service improvements. . Officials said the additional funding will help with infrastructure needs and rising costs.

The stadium will enter an area that has seen a number of proposals since the mall was demolished in 2013. It will be close to 80 hectares where housing, shopping and a park already exist. still working.
In November, a 72-unit active-senior residence called Evoke Living became the first completed phase of the Eastland development. That same month, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation released a revised plan for the 4.5-acre park on the former Eastland Mall site that includes a multi-purpose court area, a dog lounge and fence, sheds and two lawns.
Molina, who represents the area, said the stadium is expected to be an economic driver for east Charlotte.
“You’re talking about a $100 million impact on 30 acres, 500 jobs,” Molina said.
The CSA said this would allow football to grow in an area with a shortage of pitches.
“It’s not just child development, but it’s going to allow the community to have a better sense of playing soccer in the neighborhood… in the local area,” Dudley said.
According to the CSA, the fields will open in 2026 and will be available for rental programs and other organizations.
Basketball, volleyball, pickleball courts and a fitness center are planned for the indoor facility.
The building is expected to be available for concerts and dining opportunities.
