The Sugar Bowl will not be played Wednesday night.
Sugar Bowl manager Jeff Hundley said at a press conference that the game will be moved to Thursday at 8:45 pm ET, following the attack that killed 15 people and injured many more on Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. .

A man is said to have driven his truck into a crowd shortly after 3am while firing into the crowd. The suspect was killed by New Orleans police after he opened fire on them. The FBI identified the suspect in a release Wednesday afternoon and said additional explosive devices were found in the French Quarter. It is also said that explosive devices were found at the scene of the attack, which is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
The subject has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an American resident of Texas. He was driving a Ford truck, which appears to be a rental, and we are working to determine how this person got the vehicle.
An ISIS flag was on the car, and the FBI is still working to determine what the subject may be affiliated with and affiliated with terrorist organizations.
Weapons and a possible IED were in the participant’s vehicle. Other possible IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. Special FBI bomb disposal experts are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are active, and will work to make those devices safe.
The University of Georgia announced Wednesday that a UGA student was among the injured.
“At this time, we have learned that a University of Georgia student was seriously injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment,” UGA president Jere Morehead said in a statement. “I spoke with the student’s family and shared my concern, support and best wishes for the entire UGA community. I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who acted so quickly to help those affected by the incident this senseless sense of violence, as well as to the medical staff who care for the wounded.”
The game was supposed to be the last of four College Football Playoff quarterfinals. The winner of the game will play Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 8. Hundley said the game has been postponed 24 hours; was originally scheduled to begin at 8:45 pm Wednesday on ESPN. ESPN’s Pete Thameldiscussions continue to raise game time. Penn State is set to have two days off and the winner of the Sugar Bowl will have less than a week to prepare for the semifinals.
Caesars Superdome, site of the Sugar Bowl and home of the New Orleans Saints, is slated to host Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9. The NFL released a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding the attack.
In preparation for the Super Bowl, protective bollards blocking traffic onto Bourbon Street were replaced and local news station WDSU quoted witnesses as saying they were missing on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
